Rehabilitating Boreholes
Boreholes can break down for a number of reasons and fixing or ‘rehabilitating’ them is a very cost effective way to provide clean water.
Aim of the project
This project aimed to return clean water to more than 4300 people in 12 communities, 1 school with 1021 pupils and a market with many visitors. Also to improve hygiene and sanitation through training.
What we did
- Rehabilitated 14 boreholes.
- Trained 140 water and sanitation committee members, 10 from each community.
- Trained 8 pump menders.
- Trained 13 members of the school health club to promote good hygiene practices.
Outcomes
- Thousands of people have access to clean water.
- Improved hygiene practices are carried out following training.
- Increased attendance at school especially for mature girls.
- Reduced the incidence of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea.
- Empowered communities to take ownership of their water point and their well being.
