Misisi Mini Hospital

Water for Kids working with the Zambian Institute of Environmental Health has installed a solar powered water reticulation system to the Misisi Mini Hospital in the south west district of the city of Lusaka.

Misisi is a maternity and child health clinic providing a service for the local community. More than 1100 babies are delivered there each year.

The electricity supply to the hospital was intermittent and this affected the pumping of water into the supply tanks on site. As a result there were long periods during which the hospital had no water.

The new system ensures that there is a continual water supply for the hospital and lighting at night both of which will enhance infection prevention and control in the provision of maternity and children’s services.

A water committee has been established by the local community and members have been trained in the use and maintenance of the system.
